TWO DIMENSIONAL ART

My two-dimensional work includes a series of scratchboard engravings of botanical subjects taken directly from life, such as “Coneflower Bundle” . Scratchboard was historically used by illustrators in the print industry for medical and scientific illustrations before the use of photography in the 1950s. The razor-thin lines it produces capture fine detail beautifully.

“Moon Dance” exemplifies how I combine different mediums to create a physical, tactile, non-digital image of an imaginary world. The natural world serves as the point of departure. First, a collection of direct carving sculptures is playfully combined into a small-scale tableau, resembling a stage set. A drawing is then made of the three-dimensional model and transferred to the scratchboard. Color is added using acrylic inks. The observer is invited to enter the tableau and provide their interpretation of the setting.
