ALTERNATIVE LANDSCAPES
Science and technology provide alternative ways to look at a landscape .I am inspired by the pioneering work of Harold Fisk. In 1944, Fisk, a geologist and cartographer with the US Army Corps of Engineers, meticulously mapped the dynamic "Meander Belt" of the lower Mississippi River. Using a blend of old maps, aerial photography, and geological analysis, Fisk created intricate, multi-colored representations that vividly captured the river's ever-shifting channel within its valley over time. His innovative approach compressed centuries of geological history into singular, visually striking images.
My current series of paintings and wall sculptures reimagines landscapes from an imaginary aerial perspective. Informed by modern technologies such as drone photography and Lidar , these artworks explore the intersection of the natural world and the history of human influence.
